Takes getting used to but it works really well, September 4, 2016

This thing takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it it works pretty well.

I have previously used the VR headsets where you put your phone into them while you want to use the headset. This one eliminates some of the flaws of those kind, but introduces harder to navigate controls. The advantages are that you don’t get text messages or phone calls while you’re using the VR set that interrupt whatever you are doing. You also don’t have to position the phone perfectly because the screen is pre-positioned and doesn’t move.

The navigation on the other hand is a little cumbersome. It’s an Android based system and Android was built to function as a touch screen OS. So it’s just hard to control a touch screen OS without a touch screen. The controls on the outside of the unit worked perfectly for some things but not at all for others. Volume, power, and the back button all work great and make it easy to use those controls. But menu selection, navigation, and things like that are hard to use with the built in controls. One of the oddities is that the power, back, and volume buttons are all physical buttons. The navigation controls are capacitive (meaning there is no button. It just senses your finger). Problem is it’s not that sensitive and it’s hard to register touches. And for typing, it can be done with the built in on screen keyboard controlled with your head movements but it’s hard.

All of that goes away with an air mouse or a plug in keyboard. Many people don’t realize this but Android will accept a normal mouse or keyboard. Plug one into the USB port and you have a working physical keyboard and/or mouse. You can also use a bluetooth mouse or keyboard. The keyboard is handy to register your Google account and such. After that you shouldn’t need it too much. But the air mouse (sort of like a Wii Nunckuck) is a necessity. They are cheap and easy to find on Amazon.

The normal Android launcher is replaced with a fancy overlay that puts you into a fully immersive room where all the menus are hanging in mid air Minority Report style. They work, but personally I’d prefer a normal Android launcher.

As for the quality of the images, it’s good. A 1920×1080 screen looks amazing on a 5.5 inch screen in your hand. In a VR headset though you are looking through magnifying lenses that expose any flaws in the screen. This one looks very good. You can see some pixelation on low res content, but well made games and video look really good.

For watching videos you can choose to do it ‘full screen’ where the video plays in your entire field of vision but doesn’t move around if you move your head. Of you can watch it in a VR Movie theater complete with a screen and seats and such. In that one it’s the same video playing but you can look around the theater. It’s a novelty, but it’s a novelty I played with for 2 hours because it’s a cool novelty.

My favorite test app for VR is a roller coaster app called Cedar Point Valravn. It’s a great app to test VR because it’s fully immersive. You can look all around in any direction, not just where the video is aimed. This app actually comes as a suggestion on one of the menus in this unit. That pap also exposed flaws in your VR system quickly because it’s graphically intensive, requires good movement detection, and does not work and play well with cheap VR googles. On this set it worked perfectly. I must have ‘ridden’ the roller coaster 15 times while enjoying testing out the goggles.

It’s worth mentioning that there is a built in link to something called Pano that has tons of downloadable fully immersive panographic videos where you can look around in any direction. They are really cool. But be advised there are some adult themed links in there. That may make this an inappropriate gift for a child or anyone else who’d have a problem with that. They are not hard core. Just things you wouldn’t want to give to a 12 year old.

Ultimately this is a fun gadget. It definitely takes some getting used to. Even with my air mouse connect it took a few hours to get the hang of it. If you’re not good with tech stuff and figuring things out and just want things to be easy to use out of the box, the user interface might make this a problem for you. That’s where it loses 1 star for me. If you’re okay with tinkering with gadgets and taking time to learn how to control things you’ll get the hang of this fairly quick. Again, the whole thing is just Android with a fancy skin on it. So the core of it is still the same Android controls on your phone.

Its also worth noting that the lenses are plastic, not glass. So they can scratch and would be susceptible to some chemical cleaning solutions. Glass is more clear and makes a better magnifier, but the plastic lenses do work pretty well.

    In summary…..

    Pros;
    Solid build quality
    Good screen
    Easy to hook up…

    * Charge it up to full right off. There is an OS update waiting once connected to Wi-Fi, and it won’t install the update if at least below 50% power.

    * Charges at approximately 5V 1.30A. Micro USB charging cord and USB wall adaptor included.

    * Even though much of the onboard content, Panoview and the Nibiru App/Movie stuff is geared for easy interfacing with head movement and the right side control, a separate Bluetooth air mouse or such controller is strongly recommended.

    a) interfacing with standard apps, like YouTube, is extraordinarily difficult with just the headset

    b) can do text entries via a soft keyboard, either by moving your head about to select the character or swiping your finger on the right side touch-control, then touching the center button to enter it. But things like email addies and passwords are a hassle, too.

After trying several different input/navigation methods, using a separate controller to mouse cursor over the soft keys was the easiest. Could use a physical keyboard, but even that has a fiddly points, such as long as the soft keyboard is up, the system won’t recognize Shift+Special Characters from a physical keyboard. Seriously. :p

    * When no or minimal text entry is expected, my GameSire G4s Bluetooth game controller was hands down the best way to interface. My Rii i25 Air Mouse/Keyboard also worked well.

    * About 11GB free within the internal storage out-of-the-box.

    * TF Card slot did recognize my Patriot 128GB Class 10 U-1 micro SD card. USB slot also read my USB 2.0 flash drive. Watched old anime off it.

    * No internal speakers. All sound is piped through the 3.5mm Headphone jack. Comes with a typical freebie pair (naturally used my own).

    * I went ahead and installed Kodi 16.1 onto the headset, adding in 1Channel (Primewire). Streamed JURASSIC PARK (2015) – now that’s pretty neat!! And zero buffering. High definition & 3D content, though, is definitely where the display shines best.

    * Specifications don’t mention any estimated battery life, yet it seems better than most tablets. After charging it to full that first time, I remember playing with it for at least a four hour stretch, and the when I finally powered it off, battery meter was only 86%. Whatever the battery life really is, certainly can last for at least a feature length. I did have the Brightness setting at only 2 notches, which I am sure was the main reason the battery usage was so surprisingly low. A high Brightness is the #1 battery killer of any device.

    * The headset itself is comfy. My nose fit well, and the padding plush. I left the top headband off since I was using over-the-ears headphones, and the headset is still secure.
